Day 19: International girl-talk

By Marieke

We just had a 1h German-Italian-japanese body image and inferiority complex conversation in the guesthouse corridor. It is weird how the pastures are always greener on the other side. Me and Marcella tried to communicate how we feel insufficient and self-conscious here with our weird rebellious hair, our patchy pale skin and the eternal struggle to stay in shape, surrounded by perfect Japanese people with perfect hair, perfect skin and perfectly firm bodies. Also, all Japanese girls look cute and you cannot help feeling like a monstrosity.

Eko, the Japanese girl, just thought we were crazy, because in the end we are the ones that have long legs (ok maybe their legs are short but otherwise they are perfect!), blond hair, have curves (in Marcella’s case), are tall (in my case) and have slim faces and big blue/green eyes. She told us about Japanese women having their cheekbones cut to make the face look less wide and have nose enlargements because they feel they don’t have proper noses… well, what can you say… There is beauty in diversity, I guess…
